Curitiba recently had an election, leaving them with people who are not particularly interested in the efforts toward sustainability and integration. We were given a presentation by city officials who, because of the new power, were a bit disorganized. Regardless, the presentation went on. They talked about the mentality of innovation that lives within the city. The reason that they have accomplished o much is because they know that global change starts with local action. There are many separate departments which control many aspects of the city’s functions including traffic/public transportation, police/firefighters, gas/electric, and water. They believe that the city would make a great improvement by integrating these aspects into one operation center. With Curitiba Invadora (innovative Curitiba), making cultural changes is a huge focus. The knowledge to improve Curitiba is available, but making use of it all is the challenge. They want to inspire more knowledge, creativity, and motivation for innovation to become optimal. With the everchanging world, Curitiba does a great job keeping up, making it a successful city. Later at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum, we saw lots of beautiful work done by this influential Brazilian architect. The day ended with the last of presentations. |
